Cable Trench Protection with TerraLoc
TerraLoc Technical Bulletin no. 357.
The purpose is to make it difficult for and slow down cable thieves at low cost.
The cost of the alternative is very high to let them wreak their havoc.
Construction example: (vary as required.)
1 - Dig (or open) the trench with a TLB 1km long x 400mm wide and 1m deep from the substation.
2 - Place the top 150mm topsoil on one (say left) side of the trench say 2m away from the trench.
3 - Place a further say 75mm deep exposed soil on this same left side.
4 - Import 75mm equivalent stones, pebbles, rock and soil and place it all along this left side.
5 - Excavate the remaining 775mm and place on the other (say right) side, far enough to leave work space.
6 - Determine how much water added will bring the soil to OMC (optimum moisture content) for best compaction. (Use TerraLoc OMC field test.)
7 - Batch the TerraLoc chemicals and mix it into this water (say 1% of soil weight for the bottom layer and 2% for the stone layer on top of it.
8 - Mix this TerraLoc/ water solution into enough soil (right side) to fill the trench 150mm compacted (= 200mm loose.) Use TLBs, tractor rotavator or disc plow, grader (longer sections), manual labour to mix with spades, rakes, etc.
9 - Place this treated soil into the trench onto, under, around the cable in the trench (lay if not already present.)
10 - Compact well with rammer taking care not to let stones damage the cable. Screen earlier or import and stabilize sand if required, or a cushion of in situ soil can be placed first onto the cable which is only lightly compacted. If there are stones in situ, throw it from the left to the right side to leave fine for the bottom layer and stones for the second layer (or rake it out if working from the same side.).
11 - Mix TerraLoc/ water solution into the stones and soil (left side) and place into trench 150mm deep compacted.
12 - Compact well with rammer.
13 - Back fill the trench with the remaining soil from the right side and compact somewhat.
14 - Place the topsoil containing valuable grass seeds and plant food onto the surface.
15 - Add extras if required e.g. an alarm cable saying when and where the cable is cut. Layers of chicken mesh, wire or brick force, etc. Add more or thicker layers with higher dosage and stone for more strength, or reduce dosage in thinner layers to reduce cost. An inspection road or path can be added onto the surface to get there more quickly and to control vegetation and erosion.
This solution is effective especially because of the stone layer which is very difficult to cut through (diamond saws have been used to cut trenches in a G2 base course under asphalt.)
The solution is low cost because almost all materials come out of the trench and goes back into the trench. The stones (7.5% of 1m) and TerraLoc (< 4t/km) is imported. It can save large amounts of disruption and repair costs.
